Fused Deposition Modeler (FDM)

The Dimension is capable of building much larger parts, with a sturdier engineering polymer (ABS), is easier to setup jobs, and has build supports/scaffolding that will dissolve away rather than having to break them off - when compared to our Envisiontec Perfactory. It will be best used for large parts where fine surfaces and small features are not present. Specifications include:

  • 254 x 254 x 305 mm / 10 x 10 x 12in build envelope
  • Layer thickness of .245 mm (.010 in.)
  • We have blue, yellow, black, gray, white, green and red ABS plastic in stock in limited quantities.

Dimension File Preparation
  • Files should be saved as STL type. If you need to convert an .obj or .lwo please consult us on effective translations.
  • Each part should be saved as an individual file unless there are multiples of the same part.
  • If multiples exist of a part it should be indicated in the file name (i.e. name_wheelx4) so the part can be duplicated in
  • the Dimension software.
  • Parts should be water tight (i.e. no naked edges, extra surfaces, etc.) if possible. Parts that are reasonably water tight can sometimes be saved with some additional software that we have, but sometimes the overall look or fit of the part can be effected.
  • Scale should be correct in mm. Or in. units. The resolution of the layers is .245 mm (.010 in.). If an area of your part is scaled down below this it will not be printed.

Things To Keep In Mind

  • The Dimension builds in layers and have a kind of grain structure to them. This makes parts stronger in certain orientations. Layers are built in the X and Y planes while the build platform moves down to allow for the deposition of the next layer. If part strength is critical please consult with us on the best possible part orientation.
  • The dimension has two printing methods, Solid and Sparse. Solid is exactly what the name indicates, producing a solid part. Sparse indicates that the interior of the part will have an honeycomb structure. Solid gives more strength but also more weight and more cost. Sparse is lighter, weighs less, and will have lower cost.
  • Although our build area is 10in. x 10in. W x 12in. we de not recommend making a part 12 inches and having it put in the vertical orientation. This often requires a lot of support material that you have to pay for but don’t get. If your parts are larger than 10 in. please talk to us so we might come up with a possible solution together.
  • The best visual orientation for a non finished part is in our Z axis (height) If a part is not going to be post processed or strength dependent this orientation is recommended.
